Toolhead Board Replacement

Required Components

  • BigTreeTech EBB36 or compatible toolboard

    • If you choose the EBB36, you'll also need a crimping tool for Molex Mini-Fit

      • Your EBB36 packaging should contain the needed crimp pins

  • A mainboard with support for CAN Bus or USB to CAN Bus adapter board

    • Recommended USB-to-CANBus adapter: BTT U2C

  • 3D printed mount for mounting EBB36 toolboard to toolhead

  • A CAN cable supporting 2 power and 2 data lines, rated for constant motion and high current applications. (Stock USB-C cable can be used for this application when ends are removed and Molex Mini-Fit ends added

BTT EBB36 Gen 1 & Gen 2

Verified working with top mount located in printables section of appendix. Modification of stock back cover may be necessary for wire routing. Although theses instructions are written around the BTT EBB boards any toolheaad board with the same ports should work without issue.

  1. Remove two M2.5 screws securing USB-C cable to toolhead, disconnect USB-C cable.

  2. Remove drag chain.

  3. Remove the magnetic front toolhead housing, disconnect 4 pin parts cooling fan, set to the side.

  4. Disconnect the hotend heater, hotend thermistor, and hotend fan from the toolboard daughter board.

  5. Remove the hotend assembly and hotend fan.

  6. Remove the 4 screws holding the extruder, remove the extruder.

  7. Remove 3 screws from toolhead back cover, set cover to the side.

  8. Disconnect the extruder stepper motor from the toolboard.

  9. Remove the 3 screws securing the toolboard, remove the toolboard.

  10. Remove the toolboard daughter board.

  11. Remove the 2 screws securing the extruder motor, remove the extruder motor.

  12. Remove the stock motor connector and extend the wire leads to accommodate new toolboard mount location.

  13. Re-pin extruder motor to JST-XH-4p

  14. Reinstall extruder motor.

  15. Reinstall extruder.

  16. Extend the heating rod leads to accommodate landing to the EBB36 toolboard screw terminal connector.

  17. Extend the thermistor leads to accommodate the connection for the EBB36 thermistor connector.

Modifying the thermistor wire leads will change the resistance value from the OEM resistance, due to this fact and the way that temperature is measured based on the resistance of the sensor a slight temperature variation will exist.

  18. Reinstall hotend assembly.

  19. Route heating rod and thermistor leads to screw terminal and thermistor connector of the EBB36. (The notch from the removed OEM toolboard daughter board is a great location to route leads up the rear of the carriage to the toolboard when top mounted.)

  20. Re-pin hotend fan to JST-XH-2p

  21. Reinstall hotend fan and route leads to EBB36 fan connector.
